Joseph Galati analyses racing from Adelaide’s premier racetrack Morphettvile which includes a bumper 9 race card.

Race 1 – Holdfast Life & Investment Handicap 1800m
The first race on a great days racing is an 1800m handicap for the 3 year olds. Trust In Magic (1) will lead and the extra 250m from his last weeks fifth behind Thornburst will be a test but he looks to be the class runner.
Our Iridium (2) has struggled to run out the 1800m but goes down in weight courtesy of apprentice jockey Scott Westover. To Cry For (7) is a full brother to the very smart Rivers Lane, and could maybe sneak a place.

To Cry For (8)

Race 2 – Holdfast Finance Two-Year-Olds Plate 1000m
This race is the “must watch” race of the day. Less than half of this field of 15 have had race starts so the second is a bit of a lottery. Snip ‘N’ Run (2) was most impressive on debut, winning by 3½ lengths. This son of Snippetson looks to hold the key. Ortmayer (10) for the Patinack Farm team is well bred and has the booking of in form jockey Matthew Nielson whilst Minute By Minute (8) looks well-placed first up from a spell and with a claim.

Race 3 – Holdfast Insurance Brokers Handicap 2000m
Fantastic Glen (6) comes off a run over the mile at Flemington and looks a good each way in the third. She is on trial over this trip but has a win at the track and Scott Westover takes a claim. She is a good each way bet.
Maunatrice (1) has done nothing wrong in her past two runs but is again coming back quite heavily in distance and its hard to gauge how much is too much for her. She is consistent but the declining distance is of concern.
Uchimura (12) is definitely in the mix after a huge run from the outside barrier last start.

Maunatrice (1)
Uchimura (12)

Race 4 – Holdfast 65 Plus Handicap 1200m
Southern Speed (7) looks to have one foot on the till in the fourth event. This filly from the Macdonald-Gluyas yard debuted about a month ago and won impressively with the handy Tropic Thunder third on that occasion. She is by far the one to beat. Queens Fashion (10) is above average and won’t be far away. Same goes for Grand Taj (3), who, if drawn better, would’ve been a far shorter quote and would’ve had Southern Speed right in her sights.

Queens Fashion (10)
Grand Taj (3)

Race 5 – Schweppes Tonic Handicap 1100m
Prussian Storm (3) comes into the fifth off a 4-week break and has handy Victorian form. The travelling Ellerton-Zahra team doesn’t their horses out of Victoria often and must be respected when they do. Heyington Honey (7) comes off a fourth in a recent record breaking 55second challenge at Moonee Valley and will be right in this whilst Sophina (9) was in our tips last week as was only just beaten, suffice to say its best to add her to your multiples.

Heyington Honey (7)
Sophina (9)

Race 6 – Betfair Handicap 1100m
Some Call Me Tim (3) holds the key despite a horrid barrier in the first leg of the quadrella. The 4-year-old gelding has great first up form which should hold him in good stead over the sprint distance. Soda Pop Girl (6) is flying and must be included on the back of two consecutive wins as should Cruziero (9) who comes off a nice maiden win.

Some Call Me Tim (3)
Soda Pop Girl (6)
Cruziero (9)

Race 7 – Allan Scott Park Morphettville Flying Handicap 1200m
The Mark Kavanagh-trained Rock The Moment (3) looks the one to beat in the major race of the day. This Rock of Gibraltar mare had been racing in strongly last preparation and the 6-week break suits her nicely. Midnight
Mustang (2) has raced impeccably at Morphettville that could provide the spark this bloke needs. Alcopop (1) resumes and his class will be a telling factor whilst Amyjaye Power (5), Chunky Custard (7) and Sipowicz (8) are place chances.

Midnight Mustang (2)
Alcopop (1)

Race 8 – Holdfast Insurance Birthday Cup 1800m
Although its fraught with danger I’m declaring the eighth a match race between Rivers Lane (5) and Foxham (8). On the basis of value hunting I’m nominating Rivers Lane (5) as my top tip. The Street Cry gelding has only been getting better as his campaign has lengthened and jockey Todd Pannell partners this horse perfectly. Foxham (8) comes off a close victory at Caulfield and jumps back up to 1800 metres which will suit. Blahnik (1) gives the rest of the field a few years but has been racing well.

Rivers Lane (5)

Foxham (8)
Blahnik (1)

Race 9 – Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup March 14 Handicap 1600m
Hard to narrow it down to three in the last but I’ve sided with Egyptian Lova (8). He ran into the flying Candle last start and should be very close in the final event. Down in weight and up in distance suits. Public Holiday (13) has only won once in 16 starts but is never far away and should at least place. Did We Win (4) is coming into some form after a close fourth at Flemington a fortnight ago. Be sure to go wide in the last leg of the quaddie.

Egyptian Lova (8)
Public Holiday (13)
Did We Win (4)

Best Bet: Be sure to have a few dollars on Scott Westover for the jockey challenge at good odds.
